Rumor: PSP2 won't have UMD drive, says David Perry *UPDATE* PSP 2 is real, says Perry

s the UMD finally dead? That's what Shiny Entertainment founder David Perry suggests in one of his Twitter tweets (I sound like Tweety bird), where he says that Sony finally "removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive" in the PSP2.

Rumors of a new PSP model have been circulating wildly lately, the last one being a sliding screen. None of them have been directly linked to solid names in the industry though, so Perry's tweet strikes as odd. Was he commenting about the circulating rumors, or did he say something he wasn't supposed to because he knows something we don't?

It's also of note that Perry has a history of strongly criticizing Sony, saying that they have "pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3" and that they need "new business models." I'm curious to know if his source is that credible to get him so excited.

    *UPDATE*

David Perry has spoken. The PSP2 is real. Believe, or else a PSP angel will lose its wings.

I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me.

I've been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the Playstation Portable relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market. Look at what Apple is doing now.

Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal.

The ultimate goal is for the PSP to go 100% digital, he says, and this will kill the used game market (a big issue these days). Perry also believes that Sony will initially sell games on Memory sticks, and that all current PSP titles will show up on PSN (calm your fears for backwards compatibility).

Remember, a lot of what he says comes from his source, but a lot is also speculation. And we don't even know if any of it is real. But if it is, I expect we'll find out soon, maybe during GDC or E3.

    PSP Tool v0.9 Released

The all-purpose homebrew app known as PSP Tool just hit version 0.9. Raing3 has fixed up a few things, namely ridding bugs and adding sanity checks to ensure a smooth operation; as well, PSP Tool now uses the latest VLF library from moonlight. That and more detailed below.

    PSP Tool v0.9 changes…

    • Added: Support for 2.71 SE and 1.50 running under Time Machine and check to disable running on 3.71.
    • Fixed: RSOD when choosing ‘Test M33’ feature on a DC7 MMS created with this application (only occurred on Fat).
    • Fixed: Issue using SQUARE as part of the boot key when creating a Magic Memory Stick.
    • Fixed: Issue which could arise when creating more than one Magic Memory Stick in a single session.
    • Other: Other Memory Sticks can now be formatted by first clicking on the format item in the menu and before answering yes to the questions insert the second Memory Stick.
    • Other: To reduce the risk of a BSOD when installing or running a firmware from a Magic Memory Stick the registry of a 1.50 system is now copied instead of the registry of the current system (to use the current systems registry files hold the L trigger while the Magic Memory Stick is being created.)
    • Other: Implemented a check for modules which are known to cause issues with PSP Tool. If any of these modules are found a message is first shown with the modules which need to be disabled and then the PSP performs a reboot. To disable this check hold the R trigger while loading the game.
    • Updated: Now uses VLF library 1.0 by moonlight.
    • Updated: Updated the information shown in the System Information panels.

PSP homebrew - Protrekkr with PSP replay routine v1.93

If you checked out our previous article on developer hitchhikr's Protrekkr program, then you'll be glad to know that the dev has released a couple of updates that not only extends the app's functionalities but also increases the capabilities of its PSP replay routine feature.

Here are the changelogs for the past two Protrekkr releases. The PSP-centric updates have been bolded to make them easier to spot.

    v1.90
    • Added a scrollbar beside patterns.
    • The tracker can now load all these .wav file formats (mono or stereo) :
      • 8-bit integer.
      • 12-bit integer.
      • 16-bit integer.
      • 24-bit integer.
      • 32-bit integer.
      • 32-bit float.
      • 64-bit float.
    • Added an option to render a module as 32 bit (float) .wav file.
    • Inverted the right and left mouse buttons functions in patterns.
    • Fixed an issue with the loop editor.
    • Patterns now automatically scroll when using the right mouse button (also work when selecting a block).
    • Added multi notes channels, they can be used to trigger several notes / track at the same time in order to make chords or to play several instruments in the same track and route them to the same row effect / dsp effect (thus allowing to considerably reduce the dsp usage and also introduce some modularity which could be useful, especially for the PSP replay).
      • Note that these channels are shared with the polyphony ones.
    • Improved volume ramping.
    • Keys repeat was disabled when editing note columns.
    • Added LCTRL+TAB and LCTRL+LSHIFT+TAB to cycle through the notes of a track.
    • Added LALT+A and LALT+LSHIFT+A to select one or all notes/instruments columns of a track.
    • Modified the record function (for a better one, i hope).
    • Some edition commands weren't working on last track.
    • Midi channels polyphony implemented.
    • Improved Mac OS X keyboard handling a bit.
    • Compressor wasn't set right when loading .ptp files.
    v1.93
    • Resampler improved, should produce much less aliasing.
    • Fixed a small issue involving the cache memory in the PSP replay.
    • Added an option to show or hide the bottom panel in order to display more patterns rows (Shortcut: LSHIFT+ESCAPE to toggle the view)
    • Left shift wasn't active while editing data columns of patterns to enter digits.
    • Added global lists for instruments and synths, that should improve the ergonomy a bit.
    • Samples weren't re-initiliazed correctly after a "New Module" command was issued.
    • Fixed a bug in the 2nd oscillator of the synth core when using custom waveforms.
    • Fixed the rand commands in the synth tab.
    • Midi controller modification command (0x90) wasn't accessible anymore in panning row, fixed.
    • Fixed an issue that could occur with rand() function under linux.
    • Introduced zoomed tracks; Each track can be zoomed independantly and will be displayed with a bigger font.
    • Track volume wasn't correctly re-initialized when only instrument column was filled without any note.
    • Midi notes off command was broken.
    • Effect 0xAxx (Set Random Cutoff) slightly modified, the xx value is now the amplitude of the calculated random value from 0 to 0xff.
    • Implemented midi in/out for Linux and Mac OS X.
    • Fixed a bug in the recording mode.
    • Recording now starts at the current pattern line instead of restarting from it's beginning.
    • An extra note was pasted after names input when editing mode was turned on.

PSP Go!Messenger shutting down, new features planned for Go!Cam

After only a year of service, Europe's Go!Messenger service will be shutting down. According to SCEE, it just wasn't that popular:

Although Go!Messenger brought innovative communications features to the PSP community, the service has not developed the base of users that we were hoping for. We’d like to thank all fans of Go!Messenger and are sorry to have to make this announcement.

Bad news for gamers in Europe who liked the service, and bad news for other regions who were hoping to get it. If you had no idea what it was, Go!Messenger is a service that allowed you to send videos, voice recordings, and text messages. It also allowed video-chat using the Go!Cam. It will officially shut down on March 31.

On the brighter side of things, Sony says they have more services planned for the Go!Cam. What these were exactly, they didn't say. I'm just hoping they'll release it for other regions this time.

Merc Roid v.0.3 (Alpha): new features, new levels

PSP homebrew dev lokiare1 has released a new update to Merc Roid, the 3D clone of the classic Metroid game. While the game is still in its Alpha stages, it's making quite a bit of progress. This version has new features and new levels. Here are the release notes:
    • This update adds more stable level changes (though they are not linked properly). It also adds a menu to start the game.
    • Another feature is the gravity while under water is different than normal.
    • I also added a few levels, and updated others.
    • There is some more behind the scenes programming that will make more things possible in the future.
    • In order to get some things to work I had to update the LTE engine.
Some things the author is still working on is adding more monsters, bosses, and a story-line.
